Acceptance Cures the Mind and Strengthens the Heart

Be water and accept the flow

When I think of acceptance I think of water – ever calm, ever flowing. It falls in the direction of any change in flow without resistance. It takes up the form and shape of any object and even when water crashes it still maintains its equanimity. In the same way part of the real beauty of life is that the direction of flow is unpredictable. Nothing is permanent, you change and of course everything around you changes. In life such things can happen that will transform who you are and have an impact on your life. The response to life’s ever changing reality is that we need to cultivate the ability to truly accept whatever comes our way and embrace it.

Equipping oneself with the quality of acceptance is necessary when one has immense desire to change or control something that cannot be changed or avoided. This is not a quality that can easily be attained. In fact before this feeling stabilizes within one has to understand ones very own fluctuating emotions as well as, understanding the personalities and feelings of others. When the art of acceptance is eventually attained it becomes a cure for the wandering mind and strengthens the heart.

Being dissatisfied with the past, present or future will only bring misery to the heart from now until forever. Do not submit to misery. First and foremost, accept who you were and who have become. Secondly, be content with what is, whether it’s in relation to family loss, a missed opportunity, or a sudden change in your rock solid plans. Being able to let go of your resistance towards the cycle of life will help you discover that you are happier and more peaceful when you accept what happens to you or around you instead of constantly fighting to change things.

Choose not to judge what happens to you. Instead, believe that everything happens for a reason and that better things will always follow. I know it’s hard to put this into practice when you deeply wish things were different. But the truth is, sometimes we can’t change our reality, even if we tried.

Understanding this process may help one achieve the quality of acceptance sooner rather than later and live a life in a world where the space that surrounds you remains peaceful. The mind need not worry about situations that one cannot control. The heart need not go through pain over something that was ultimately supposed to be. Acceptance helps one withstand most anything, if we start cultivating acceptance in our lives right now, we’ll most likely cope with future situations in a different way and view it from a different perspective.

Know that possessing this quality won’t change the things that are happening around you, but it will make you change the way you perceive what happens around you.
Think of it in this way…“Embracing acceptance does not clear the path of obstacles, but makes the obstacles part of the path. In that way your mind sees only a path and not the obstacles.”

Be water and accept the flow.
